As an eco-conscious parent, part of ensuring that our world is a better place for our children and grandchildren is teaching them sustainable habits now.
Kids are always watching.
And by your consistent lead by example remember they’re always observing and naturally pick up on your low-waste, environmental ideals.
While it’s not easy to explain sustainability to adults, it’s even harder to explain to children.
But, don’t worry!
Here are 3 fun ways to teach sustainable habits to kids that will help you make it possible to raise eco-friendly kids.
1.Make sustainability a game.
Kids love games!
To make sustainability fun, add games, challenges, and special recognition when they do the effort of doing something related to it.
For example, conserve water by having a dishwasher clean or dirty sign slider so never take out a dirty dish from the dishwasher again by creating a challenge.
Another example is to make eating an entire meal something to be celebrated.
You can plan a nightly prize for induction into the Clean Plate Club, maybe there isn’t.
The reason for doing this is to show your child that you’re watching his or her eating habits; eating everything on the plate is important, too.
2. Personalize the ‘why’.
If kids understand why things are important to them...
They are more likely to adopt environmentally responsible behaviors as they grow.
Rather than telling them “do this to help the planet”...
Teach them about sustainability by finding ways to associate their actions with something they care deeply about.
For example, if your child loves eating seafood...
You can talk to them about the importance of keeping waterways clean so he or she can continue to enjoy their favorite foods.
3. Let your child lead on small projects and experience small wins.
Most of the kids hate lectures.
Instead of a lecture, why not teach your child about sustainability by setting up situations that enable exploration and independent conclusions.
Smaller goals are vital.
You see, a child who sees his or her efforts translate into a success story is much more likely to sign up for the next endeavor than someone whose first effort goes in frustration or realizing that he/she cannot solve the problem.
Examples of small activities you can enjoy with your kids:
– Start to have a home composting system for the entire family
– Use an earth-friendly customizable sign to write any chore - from feeding the dog or cat to emptying the dishwasher, to whose turn it is to clean the kitty litter.
This will help you not just level up your family’s eco-friendly life but also will help you make things easier than ever!
How are you raising eco-conscious children? Do you have any more ideas aside from the three I’ve mentioned? Feel free to share it in the comments!
